This gem of a flower is a Superb Mariposa Tulip, no kidding, that's really its name. The flower's beauty was not lost on whoever named it. It grows in open places throughout California. There's a possibility it's the Square Mariposa Tulip though; they are very similar. If anyone knows for sure, please comment. Calochortus superbus
