Nut of Many Uses

Nut of Many Uses

The poisonous nuts of the California Buckeye were used by Native Americans to stupefy schools of fish in streams to make them easier to catch. They were also an alternative food supply when acorn supply was sparse. After much leaching to remove the toxins, the buckeyes could be ground into a meal similar to that made from acorns. Aesculus californica

  • I also love the greens and bricky reds of this one. The nut looks like a mysterious bag of something, neatly tied at top and bottom. Whimsical.
