Whose Entree?

Whose Entree?

Yellowjacket nests are made from a material produced by females who combine their saliva excretions with wood fibers to form the familiar looking paper nest. The nest is started by a single queen, called the foundress. They usually last for only one season and can reach the size of a basketball if they aren't attacked like this one has been. Some mammal digs the nests, eats the wasps and casts the nests out. I'm not sure of the mammal, can anyone help out? Vespula sp.

  • I know bears can attack these nests, but perhaps not this one as the hole looks too small for a bear crime scene.

  • Skunk, maybe? Out of the few mammals I can think of (badger, bear, etc) who might eat wasps, a skunk makes the most sense to me.
