Lily by Day

We found the subtle yet striking Hartweg's Doll Lily by not mowing early. This perennial hides in the taller mostly non-native grasses, closes its petals by dusk, and blooms for only a couple of weeks. By not mowing early, its seedbank has expanded in recent years and there are many more plants in the locations we first noticed them. The Doll Lily is found only in the foothill grasslands of California (which are fast converting to housing) and it's the only genus in its species. Odontostomum hartwegii
