Poet's Butterfly

Poet's Butterfly

This earth-toned butterfly likes meadows and oak woodlands and is the Propertius Duskywing. The males perch on hilltop openings to await receptive females, and, yes, this one was spotted on a hilltop opening. Is that why this butterfly is named after a Latin poet? Erynnis propertius

  • Perhaps this beautiful butterfly is reciting the following lines from Propertius, as he awaits his desired female. Lovely image.
"Cynthia first captivated wretched me with her eyes, I who had never before been touched by Cupid." (I.1.1-2)
"Your love has buried all others, nor has any woman after you put sweet fetters upon my neck." (III.15.11-2)

  • This IS a lovely shot. If I were a butterfly, I'd certainly find this fella more attractive than the more colorful species. Earth tones...that's what I'm talkin' about baby! ;^)

  • What a fabulous pattern on the top wing, the contrast of that ruby color, black, white — and the tobacco on bottom wing — just gorgeous!
