Empty Nest

Empty Nest

To rear their young, Bald-faced Hornets start a new nest each spring. The queen finds loose bark into which she places her eggs and adds saliva to the paper bark to form the paper-like smooth shell. These nests may eventually contain thousands of hornets which are very aggressive when disturbed. Luckily this nest was down and empty; I have been chased by hornets through the forest, and badly stung. Dolichovespula maculata

  • Very interesting photo... I'll be careful in the woods -- I'm not sure if I can run as fast as I used to... Must have been terrible to have gotten stung!

  • here, in your photo, it looks so peaceful - like a geological formation that took eons to form.
